Our group had been paddling out from Broughton Island, on the New South Wales Coast north of Sydney on the last day of an overnight trip when on the horizon we saw the spray of what we new knew immediately were whales. It wasn't too hard to tell - the see was flat, the air was calm and we were all relaxed and cruising along , drinking in the scenery. The spouts stood out like water fountains. We paddled over in their direction and stopped nearly 400 meters from the pair. Soon we were treated to a show of a mother and her calf broaching up into the air - the calf playing like any young child would and having obvious fun at it too. It was at this time they headed straight over to us ....... the baby banging it's tail in the water like a drum - over and over. You know they are big when the tail of the mother was nearly the same width as the length of our kayaks! With hearts in mouths and heaps of ooohs and ahhhs we were treated to them coming right up to our kayaks!! We even tried to paddle back away from them, but when it was obvious they wanted to check us out we thought it best to stay still .... just in case. For a few minutes ...... we were treated to a very special form of magic. Two awesomely huge beings traveling through the water aroubnd us like ballerinas. Simply incredible!! A beauty diving near our kayaks Ashton Cherry |
