Heart of The Hawkesbury

Patonga Village onto Brisk Bay around Juno Point past Croppy Beach to Sandy Beach Return

Another spectacular paddle beginning from the isolated fishing village of Patonga, nestled on the edge of Brisk Bay in the Lower Hawkesbury River/Broken Bay region. You paddle out onto Brisk Bay, around Walker Point, then head upriver on the remains of the ocean swell as it slowly fades on its journey up river. Rounding Juno Point, the river takes a completely different character - much flatter and shallower.

It was precisely this reason that the Irish convicts, upon escaping from the penal colony at Newcastle in the very early 1800's, chose this point at Croppy Beach to try to make their dash for freedom to the settlement of Port Jackson. What a story this beach has to tell!! We paddle on past this site of escape and murder across the Hawkesbury to Sandy Bay - aptly named for its wonderful shallow sandy bay wonderful for swimming, wading and exploring. It’s here we lunch on the beach. Surrounded by the Brisbane Water and Ku-ring-ai Chase National Parks, this area is spectacular for it's remote qualities. After lunch we head back along the Hawkesbury with stunning views out to sea past Lion Island as we paddle along underneath breathtaking sandstone overhangs and wind sculptures. Paddling past beaches with curious names like Gunyah and Hungry, we finally head back across the Bay to Patonga and a refreshing final swim.
